Taking care of your garden requires some changes throughout the year. See below for
Lily of the Valley Design recommendations on the maintenance of your garden landscape:
March, April, and May are very busy growing months in California. This is a
good time to start adding supplemental water through additional watering or
your irrigation systems. You can also add color to your garden by planting annuals,
which during this time, are readily available from your local nursery.
June, July, and August are the warmest months of the year. Days are
longer and therefore your plants are exposed to more sunlight. This is a good time to
renew mulch to preserve soil moisture and discourage weeds. Be sure to
protect your fruit trees and also make sure roses receive plenty of water during the
warmest months. Keeping your lawn a little longer during these months helps reduce
evaporation and keeps the soil cooler.
September, October and November. During these months, you don't need to
water your plants as frequently. This is also a good time to install new lawns and
perennials. October is a good month to plant California natives such as Ceanothus
(California Lilac) and Manzanita.
December, January and February. Depending on the rainfall adjust your
watering schedule accordingly. January and February are also good months to start
planting bare-root fruit trees.
